A preliminary double A4 sketchbook pencil drawing. Slightly adjusting the scene in the reference photograph enabled judging the most suitable compositional arrangement and tonal values. This comprehensive study was done to facilitate free brush painting i.e. no initial drawing when beginning to paint.
