Painted on rough watercolour paper. A typical scene when coal was the main energy source and shows a Gas Board collier passing the high and low light at the lower reaches of the Tyne. Vessels such as this were very common as they carried coal from the Tyne to London and the south east. They were far from glamorous, rarely highlighted in the public eye and were always taken for granted as part of the industrial scene. The red markings around the funnel depict the flames of a gas fire. The high and low lights are preserved navigational aids that were used in the time of sail to guide shipping in to the river mouth without hitting the nearby rocks known as the black middens. Painted on rough surfaced watercolour paper.
Picture size 14" x 21".
