Tone and colour of the buildings were dark. To exactly replicate this would have made the middle distance and quayside too prominent. The composition would appear as regimented rows of light and dark. Tonal level was reduced so some detail would be evident. Sunlit areas were added to break up the dark tone plus the harbour wall was a little darker than the buildings. The roadway received full sun hence the thin bright line between the buildings and the harbour wall. The foreground sand was given a thin wash of light red.
