Tonal drawing

Overworking the initial sketch with a range of soft pencils gives a feeling of distance. To achieve this the foreground is given heavy tone which gradually decreases with the middle distance and eventually becomes fainter with distance in the background. Background tones are made fainter by carefully erasing the drawing using a kneading or putty rubber and gradually less so in the middle distance.
