Adding the figures completed the picture and using white gouache carefully on the masts and parts of the superstructure brought the boats into focus. Darker washes and marks - some made with the end of a twig to give a different mark compared to a brush - and light touches of white finished the water. To stress distance the background was washed over with water and dried with a tissue to remove some of the tone on the quayside buildings.
