The water involved a range tones. The tone of the foreground water was deliberately strengthened to emphasise the feeling of distance. White paint was used for light on the water surface. The small lights on the foreground water were made by carefully scratching the surface of the paper with a scalpel. Detail work for the rigging and masts were put in last as well as distant figures on the quayside.
